Maktoob: a bilingual book store, self-initiated UX/UI concept
Maktoob is a self-initiated concept, not a commissioned project, and it takes no real payments. It redesigns an unfinished Figma file for an e-book site. The file called itself an e-book store but sold paper types and shipping, mixed currencies, used three names and had no Arabic.
The idea
Maktoob means both "written" and "meant to be" in Arabic. The product is built around that double meaning: every day, a book written for you.
What I did
UX audit, product decisions, information architecture, UI design and system, interaction and motion, the 3D customiser and the front-end, in Arabic and English.
Key decisions
Choose by the writing: first lines and a three-line taste test replace cover grids.
Read before you buy: the first chapter is one click from any book.
Digital and printed without competing: buy the printed copy and the e-book opens right away.
Make it yours: a real-time 3D book with binding, cover, foil, paper and your name.
Built for Egypt: phone sign-in, landmarks and a map pin, cash on delivery, wallets, InstaPay and Fawry.
Arabic is designed, not translated: full RTL with Arabic numerals and book typography.
