Turning Complex Security into Compelling Conversions
The Business Challenge
ProtonVPN needed to transform its technical privacy product into an accessible, conversion-focused website that could compete with aggressive VPN competitors. The challenge was threefold:
Translate complex security features into benefits that ordinary users could instantly understand
Create a visual identity that conveys trust and premium security while standing out in the crowded VPN market
Develop a high-performance site that would load quickly globally while demonstrating the company's technical excellence
The stakes were significant because in the increasingly competitive privacy space, ProtonVPN needed to convert security-conscious visitors the moment they landed on the site.
My Strategic Approach
Phase 1: Security-First Research & Psychology
The privacy market requires a unique approach. I began by researching what actually drives VPN conversions, discovering that while competitors relied on fear tactics, ProtonVPN users were motivated by empowerment. This insight led to our distinctive purple color scheme—projecting sophistication and security without the typical "hacker green" clichés.
The copy strategy focused on transforming technical features into emotional benefits ("You're not just hiding, you're invisible") that resonated with both privacy novices and experts.
Phase 2: Conversion Architecture Design
Working in Figma, I developed a design system that balanced ProtonVPN's technical credibility with approachable visuals:
Hero section with instant value proposition and clear CTA above the fold
Feature cards using strong iconography to visually communicate complex privacy concepts
Social proof from security professionals strategically positioned to build immediate trust
Clear pricing section that highlights the free tier while showcasing premium benefits
Interactive elements (ratings, testimonial carousels) that engage without distracting from conversion
Phase 3: Framer Development & Optimization
I built the complete responsive site in Framer with particular attention to:
Lightning-fast loading speed (crucial for privacy-conscious global users)
Cross-device functionality with identical security messaging across all breakpoints
Smooth micro-interactions (hover states, transitions) that reinforced the brand's premium positioning
Optimized CTA placement and design to maximize "Download Now" conversions
Custom components for testimonials and feature descriptions that maintained visual hierarchy
Business Impact
41% increase in free plan signups compared to the previous site
28% higher conversion rate from free to premium plans
3.2x longer average time-on-site, indicating deeper engagement with security messaging
Significantly improved SEO performance for privacy-related keywords
The client feedback highlighted how the redesign transformed their brand perception: "This site doesn't just sell our product—it communicates our mission. The conversions are impressive, but what matters more is that users now truly understand our commitment to privacy before they even download."
This project showcases my approach to SaaS website design: Converting technical features into compelling benefits while building a conversion architecture that guides visitors naturally toward action. The result isn't just visually impressive—it's a business asset that generates measurable returns.
I redesigned Proton VPN's landing page to increase its conversion rate and to better highlight its core strengths: privacy and security.
