I, Lyfty, always had a lot of imagination. I am a creative individual who enjoys making her imagination come to life. I love storytelling and illustrating, as well as the style of children's books. This is why I am making my own children's book with my two characters : Kiwi and Lychee. Kiwi is a calico cat and Lychee is a scientific snail. Together, they go on a quest to retrieve a magic carrot that helps lands flourish.
I have skills that are required to make a children's book, such as:
Writing: I love writing and it is very fun to write for a younger audience. I usually write my novels for a grown up audience, so this is a welcome change as it requires new skills in terms of storytelling.
Illustrating: To make a children's book more engaging, pretty pictures often are a must. I am making an illustrated children's book using my cute style aimed at younger audiences.
Creativity: It requires a lot of thinking, plotting and creativity to write any kind of book, but children's books are the ones that let me use my imagination and creativity the most as it often is fantasy and fiction themed.
Attention to Detail: I am meticulous at drawing my children's book illustrations. I spend time refining every detail.
Now, I'll let you have a small glimpse at my process:
Conceptualization: First I brainstorm ideas for the story and the characters, including in this story Kiwi and Lychee. I develop their personalities, the adventures they embark on and more.
Writing: I love writing children's books as they require a lot of creativity and imagination. I draft the story line and refine the dialogue and pacing. I make a rough outline that I follow. I write as much as I can, organize it into chapters and expand it. Then, I work on correcting my mistakes and editing it.
Illustration: I first sketch the characters and do a few versions of them and what i want them to look like. Then, I draw them and finish their character sheet to have accurate references as I draw illustrations. I make a rough draft for the illustration based on the part of the book I wish to illustrate, I then sketch it and render it.
Collaboration: For this project, I hope to collaborate with a publishing company to get my children's book out there.
But what are my motivations to write a children's book? Here they are :
Inspiring Children: I want to ignite children's imagination and foster a love for reading through my stories. I wish my stories send an important message to children.
Promoting Diversity: I try my best to make my characters diversified, from their personality to their looks. It helps children feel connected to the story.
Creating Joy: Seeing children interact with my work with joy drives my motivation to continue my mission.
Educational Value: I try to bring important lessons to children through my children's books. For example, I have an other children's book project based on space, and it teaches children about space, misinformation and more.
Here are two pictures of Kiwi and Lychee.
