Empowering Louisiana students

Sean Riegel

Introduction When Discovery Education, in collaboration with 66degrees, approached us, they were driven by a transformative mission: using a grant from the Gates Foundation to help underprivileged students improve their math scores by understanding the core motivations behind student engagement and participation. The project was backed by a team of researchers from LSU, who had been developing innovative methods to assess student motivation and identify how it impacted their ability and desire to learn.
What they needed was a platform that could seamlessly transmit this valuable research, gather real-time feedback, and provide actionable insights for educators to improve student outcomes. Their goal was clear—develop a solution that could quickly and accurately analyze the data to deliver practical solutions to educators in an efficient and scalable way.
In under six months, we helped turn this vision into reality. We moved from a phase zero concept to an MVP application being actively used by one of the largest school districts in Louisiana, empowering educators with the tools to improve student engagement and, ultimately, learning outcomes.
The Challenge Inconsistent Student Engagement Despite being an innovative platform, SuccessSpark faced challenges with keeping students consistently engaged across various learning modules. The goal was to create an engaging environment that kept students motivated while ensuring that the system was scalable and adaptable for a variety of educational needs.
Limited Insights into Student Motivation While SuccessSpark was rich in educational content, it lacked a comprehensive understanding of students' attitudes and motivations. Without these insights, it was difficult to design interventions or tailor the learning experience to improve engagement and retention effectively.
Inefficient Data Handling The platform struggled with presenting the wealth of data collected in a meaningful way. The data insights were not being translated into actionable strategies, making it difficult for educators to interpret the data and adjust their teaching methods effectively.
Challenges in Customization and Scalability SuccessSpark needed a solution that could easily scale across multiple educational institutions while providing customizable features for different curricula. The system was in need of a redesign that would make the user experience more intuitive, while also allowing for adaptability and customization. The Approach Data-Driven Research to Understand Student Needs We began by gathering data from students and educators to understand their needs, behaviors, and challenges. This allowed us to identify the key motivational factors that would help drive engagement and tailor the learning experience more effectively.
Streamlined User Flow for Better Engagement Focusing on user-centric design, we streamlined the user flow, ensuring that students could easily navigate the platform and stay engaged. We simplified the interface while maintaining the depth of content, improving accessibility and reducing friction points.
Incorporating Motivational Insights Using data analytics, we built a system that would capture and analyze students' motivation levels, enabling personalized learning paths and targeted interventions. This allowed educators to have more tailored insights into student progress and engagement.
Scalable Design for Multiple Institutions We ensured the design was scalable and customizable, allowing SuccessSpark to seamlessly adapt to different educational environments and curricula. By creating a flexible structure, we enabled educators to modify content and teaching approaches according to their specific needs.
The Solution By combining research-driven insights with a streamlined, intuitive design, we were able to create an engaging, scalable learning platform. The redesigned SuccessSpark now offers educators actionable insights into student motivation, enabling them to drive engagement and improve learning outcomes.
The solution allowed for easy customization across various educational institutions, providing a tailored experience for both students and educators. Since the launch, SuccessSpark has seen a significant improvement in student engagement and retention. Educators are now empowered with data that informs their teaching strategies, creating a more impactful learning experience overall.
