Educational Publishing Brand - Kit Segmentation & Automation Setup
The Problem
Test Prep Insight, an educational nonfiction publisher operating across two distinct content verticals, CFA exam prep and language learning, was sending the same emails to every subscriber regardless of what they were studying, why they were studying it, or how close they were to their goal. Open rates were declining, unsubscribes were climbing, and there was no mechanism to tell the difference between a CFA Level 3 candidate six weeks from their exam and someone learning Spanish for a holiday.
The core issue wasn't the content, it was the absence of any routing logic behind it. Every subscriber entered the same place and stayed there.
The Architecture
Automation architecture
Automation architecture
Built inside Kit over 3 weeks, with WordPress embedding handled via Kit's native plugin, the system was designed around a 13-tag taxonomy across two dimensions: vertical and intent.
Tag Structure
2 vertical tags: CFA, Language Learning
3 CFA sub-tags: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3
4 Language sub-tags: Travel, Work/Business, Fluency, Fun/Casual
3 Intent tags: Early Research, Actively Studying, Exam Imminent
Forms Two opt-in forms, each built with dropdown selectors that do the segmentation work at the point of entry:
language form
language form
CFA Opt-In with a level selector (preparing for Level 1 / 2 / 3)
Spanish Opt-In with a purpose selector (learning for Travel / Work / Fluency / Fun)
Both styled to brand (#003388 button, white background), with embed codes delivered to the developer with precise placement instructions for WordPress.
Sequences 4 sequences, each opening with a PDF delivery specific to the subscriber's entry point:
sequence setup

CFA Welcome | Level 1, 2, and 3, Email 1 delivers the level-specific PDF, Email 2 delivers level-aligned content, Email 3 fires a universal intent qualifier via link clicks
Language Welcome | Intent Qualifier, same structure, with Email 2 tailored to the subscriber's stated purpose, Email 3 qualifying intent via link behavior
Automations, 12 total
CFA Entry Automation: conditionally routes to the correct CFA sequence based on level tag applied at opt-in
automations

Language Entry Automation: routes to the language sequence
3 CFA Path automations (one per level)
4 Language Path automations (one per purpose)
3 Intent Path automations triggered by link-click behavior in Email 3 across both verticals
The intent layer is what separates this from a standard welcome sequence build. Rather than treating all subscribers as equivalent once they've entered a vertical, Email 3 in every sequence uses link-click routing to identify where each subscriber actually is in their journey, and tags them accordingly. A CFA Level 2 subscriber who clicks the "exam is coming up" link gets a different path than one who clicks "just started studying," even though they entered through the same form.
The Result
Subscribers across both verticals now receive content matched to their specific goal and demonstrated intent, not just their opt-in source. The one-size-fits-all broadcast model is replaced with 12 automated paths that adapt based on behavior. The tag taxonomy is structured cleanly enough that adding a new vertical, a new language, or a new exam level extends the existing system rather than requiring a rebuild.

The publisher now has a segmentation foundation that gets more accurate the longer a subscriber is in the system, because every link click is a data point, not just an engagement metric.

What the client had to say

Timothy built a segmented Kit architecture across 2 verticals: sequences, intent tagging, PDF delivery. Scope expanded and he absorbed it professionally. Clean delivery, strong comms, genuinely useful advice. Will hire again for phase 2
