About
Most car films give the engine one voice: a roar. The Mustang GTD deserved more than that.
Man vs Machine created a stunning CGI film for Ford’s Mustang GTD campaign by Wieden+Kennedy, cutting between sweeping landscapes and extreme macro close-ups of the machine itself. I reimagined the entire sound design from scratch with one question in mind: what does this car sound like from a mile away, and what does it sound like from a millimeter away?
Work
I split the film into two sound worlds and made them talk to each other.
Out wide: the GTD tearing through the landscape. Full body, real weight, the presence of a supercar carving through open space.
Up close: pistons firing, brake discs glowing, parts moving in perfect timing. Here the engine stops being one sound and breaks apart into individual mechanical events, each one heard on its own.
Every cut flips the perspective. Pull back and you feel the power. Move in and you hear the engineering. The contrast keeps the ear as engaged as the eye, so the film never settles into one long engine drone.
Result
A car film you don’t just watch, you feel from the outside in. The sound turns each shot change into a shift in perspective, giving the Mustang GTD both the muscle and the precision it was built on.
