Quad Cortex Tone Consulting & Documentation

A client came to me with a Neural DSP Quad Cortex - a powerful, deeply configurable amp modeler and profiler - and needed both hands-on tone consulting and the documentation to actually use what we built together.

Tone development: worked through amp block selection, cab/IR pairing, and signal chain ordering across firmware versions V3 and V4, tuning for the client's specific gear and playing style rather than relying on generic presets

Spectrum analysis: used Voxengo SPAN inside Ableton to visually diagnose frequency buildup and carve out space in the mix - turning "this doesn't sound right" into a specific, correctable EQ decision

Remote session infrastructure: built out a Zoom audio routing setup so tone-shaping sessions could happen live and interactively, with the client hearing real-time changes rather than waiting on rendered examples

Documentation: wrote a reference manual covering the finalized signal chain, settings rationale, and firmware-specific notes so the client could reproduce and adjust the tone independently going forward

Amp modelers like the Quad Cortex are powerful enough to be genuinely confusing - most users either underuse the platform or get lost in the options. Combining hands-on tone coaching with objective spectral analysis and then documenting the result turns a one-time consulting session into something the client can actually maintain and build on.

A finalized, documented tone setup matched to the client's gear and playing style, plus a reference manual enabling independent adjustment going forward.
