KAIHŌ - Matcha Tea Branding

KAIHŌ is a matcha tea brand built around the concept of 開放 (kaihō), a Japanese word meaning release, opening, and the gentle unfolding of the mind. It frames tea not as a product, but as a quiet ritual of transition—moving from tension to ease, from structure to flow.
At the core of the identity sits a simple triad: Release. Open. Ritual. These three words define the entire system. Release refers to the inner letting go; Open describes the state of becoming receptive; Ritual reflects the slow, intentional act of preparing and experiencing tea.
The packaging is designed as a physical extension of this philosophy. A matte off-white, washi-textured surface forms the base, while a subtle embossed wave pattern on the front of the box evokes the movement created by a bamboo whisk (chasen) in matcha. The pattern is not decorative, but tactile—suggesting motion through pressure and material rather than illustration.
On the side panel, the vertical shodō calligraphy さざなみ (sazanami) appears, meaning “small ripples.” Executed with expressive brush variation and ink density shifts, it captures the surface response of that inner transformation—imperfect, alive, and transient.
Together, these elements form a quiet system of meaning built on tactile restraint and ritualistic simplicity—where Release. Open. Ritual. becomes not a slogan, but a physical and emotional sequence embedded into the object itself.
