A Quiet Room — Bilingual Literary Portfolio

Overview

A Quiet Room is my self-directed bilingual literary archive: a place for poetry, fiction, and work in progress that preserves the distance and silence the writing needs.

The challenge

A poetry portfolio can easily become either a plain list of links or an over-designed gallery that competes with the text. I wanted the archive to feel authored and memorable while keeping each poem readable in both Chinese and English.

Design approach

I treated the site as a quiet editorial room rather than a conventional portfolio. Restrained colors, serif typography, fine rules, generous spacing, and a seasonal structure give the archive a consistent rhythm without turning the poems into decoration.

What I built

21 original poems published in both Chinese and English
A four-part archive organized as spring, summer, autumn, and winter
Dedicated reading pages for every poem
Responsive desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts
A persistent Chinese–English language switch
Canonical and hreflang metadata, sitemap, robots rules, and a social preview image
Project, writing, now, and about sections inside one visual system

Technical delivery

The site is built with Next.js, React, TypeScript, and custom CSS. It is exported as a static site and served through GitHub Pages, keeping the public archive fast and simple to maintain.

Result

The finished site is a working literary object rather than a decorative mockup. Its structure supports a growing bilingual archive while keeping the writing—and the pauses around it—at the center.
