I was called upon to fix a major problem. For six months, a project sat dormant. The energy trading desk at a major energy company was migrating data to the cloud. The project lead had transitioned to a new position in the company and didn't tell anyone. Everyone assumed someone else was handling it but no one was. The client was incensed and rightfully so. This was the only IT modernization project being tracked by the board of directors for this publicly traded company. There were millions of dollars at stake. More than that, the function of the trading desk relies entirely on data.
I was fighting an uphill battle before I started. I had 4 months to complete a project that was projected to take 18 months to complete. I had my work cut out for me. There were thousands of users to inform, train, and engage with. There were dozens of teams to interface with and gather requirements from. We had finite resources and meager time slots to complete the migrations. Migrating a few hundred TBs of data over a few weekends is easier said than done. I had to use every change management and user engagement tool imaginable to get an actionable plan up and running.
At the end of the day, we made it happen. In collaboration with a rockstar team, everything went smoothly.
