Case Study: Caha! — Revolutionary app for drivers

Overview

A revolutionary new mobile app for UK drivers to store car documents, find the cheapest fuel, parking and MOT/Tax reminders. Introduced as a startup venture under the Direct Line brand to save on costs, modernise infrastructure.
The pre-existing app had a weak visual design and user experience foundations. I was bought in to redesign the core product, build a design system from the ground up refining and expanding features to align even more closely with apple human interface guidelines and customer expectations to ensure the product is accessible, scalable and functional.
Collaborating closely with an on-site product and engineering team, I addressed various design tasks weekly through Azure Dev-Ops. The goal is to enhance the app's core user experience, set the foundations for a design system, engineering handover and design system adoption, user acceptance testing. This case study outlines our design approach, key focus areas, and the collaborative efforts that drive the app's continuous improvement.

Approach User-Centric Design

The core design philosophy centres on creating an intuitive and cohesive user experience. By adhering to Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, we ensure that each element of the app feels familiar to iOS users. Regular iterations and user feedback play a crucial role in refining the interface, ensuring that the app remains both functional and engaging.

Main Screen

The garage screen serves as the user's core entry point to managing all and everything that relates to managing their car. I built upon existing foundations designed it to display upcoming trips prominently, with essential details such as important dates, petrol prices, car valuations and more. Clear visual hierarchies and intuitive navigation elements guide users effortlessly through their garage alongside easy access to their additional vehicles.

Collaboration and Handoff

The on-site React Native engineering team (Team size 8) were core in the design and development processes, ensuring we remained on-scope and on time. By maintaining clear lines of communication, we ensure that design are feasible and effectively implemented using React Native + Storybook . Utilising organised Figma files including an atomic design system. We streamline the handoff process to ensure design and engineering were aligned on workflows during each by-weekly sprint.

Key Outcomes

Enhanced User Experience: The app's design improvements have led to a more intuitive and enjoyable user journey, aligning with native iOS expectations.
Increased User Engagement: Features like map view has increased in-app purchase for parking & charging. Alongside in higher user engagement and satisfaction.
Streamlined Development Process: Effective collaboration and clear design documentation have expedited development sprints, allowing for rapid deployment of new features and updates.
