Learning Experience for 1.6M+ Users at Great Learning Academy

My role. Lead UX Designer – Mobile App Strategy & Research
Project description. Redesigned Great Learning Academy’s mobile app for 1.6M+ users across India. Led user research revealing mobile-first, laptop-second learning behaviour. Introduced micro-learning, career-linked UI, and contextual motivation. Improved course completion by 35%, premium conversions by 25%, and App Store rating from 3.2 to 4.6. Designed an end-to-end, emotionally intelligent experience for mobile upskilling, especially for freshers and working professionals.
Skills and deliverables
UX Research, Mobile App, Usability Testing, Mind Map, Stakeholder Management
Great Learning Academy’s mobile app redesign was initiated to better serve India’s growing population of mobile-first learners. Despite being a leading professional education platform, the app was not meeting user expectations, especially as 72% of users accessed content primarily via mobile. Our challenge was to create an experience that matched their ambitions, supported fragmented learning patterns, and drove measurable career outcomes.
The Challenge
Our users weren’t just browsing content—they were learning in micro-moments: commuting, during work breaks, or late at night. The desktop-first experience didn’t support these behaviours. Moreover, our research revealed a hybrid pattern: users consumed learning on mobile but practiced on laptops. This insight shaped our mobile-first design approach.
User Research
I led an in-depth research initiative that combined analytics and user interviews. We analysed Google Analytics data and conducted structured interviews with six diverse users, ranging from students to professionals. Each session explored users’ goals, daily routines, pain points, and platform usage.
Key Insights:
Users learned in short, focused bursts
Career anxiety was a major motivator
Users wanted visual progress tied to career goals
Mobile was the default, not a secondary device
Peer success stories and feedback increased motivation
Design Strategy
We built for a range of user types from first-time learners to career switchers and supported three product tiers: free courses, premium certifications, and university programs.
Product Architecture Redesign
Free Tier: Skill-building, assessments, community features, upgrade prompts
Premium Tier: Real-world projects, mentorship, resume reviews, job prep
University Programs: Curriculum tracking, interview support, academic dashboards
Design Execution
Using tools like Figma, Principle, and A/B testing, we designed a scalable UI system optimised for small screens and varied connectivity. Key UI features included:
Touch-friendly navigation
Offline-first content access
Visual progress tracking
Personalised course suggestions
Context-aware notifications
Results
Mobile session duration: +40%
Course completion rate: +35%
App rating: 3.2 → 4.6 stars
Premium conversion rate: +25%
60% increase in users achieving career milestones
Takeaways
This project wasn’t just about making mobile usable it was about empowering millions to learn anytime, anywhere, and transform their careers. Every design decision was guided by empathy, performance, and career relevance.
Conclusion
The redesigned Great Learning Academy mobile app now serves as the primary learning platform for over 1.6 million users. It delivers career-aligned, mobile-first learning experiences that match the urgency and ambition of today’s learners.
