Overview

I created a poster for the Twenty One Pilots album Trench using Adobe Photoshop. I focused heavily on the lore, color palette, and important aspects of the album in order to fully capture the vibe tied to it.

Design Process

I started by browsing for photoshoots that band members Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun for the album and photos from music videos. I started building the background, which is a photo of the place many Trench music videos were shot in. I then filled the canvas with a dark blue and played with blend modes to still see the background but make it appear like it was night. I then imported the photo of Tyler and Josh and masked out the original background to put them into the scene. I added the fire after this and set it to a blend mode and then painted on the highlights it would have been casting onto Tyler and Josh. I added their creature, Ned, to the top because he is also a main character in the lore. I painted on a bit of highlights to him as well before adding the text in the same font as the album and using the signature trench yellow. I added a second layer of text and set it to a blend mode in order to separate the text from the rest of the composition so it didn't seem to float in space.

Difficulties

A significant portion of the difficulty surrounding this project was just trial and error to figure out what fit best with the rest of the composition and figuring out how to balance the elements so not one specific part was busier than another. There was several different ideas I had that I ended up not liking as much as I originally thought, which I handled by continuing my search and trying a number of different things.
