Introduction

Client wanted a simple but sophisticated website where she could promote and sell her cakes. For this project, there were 3 challenges I set for myself - the website needed to be very appealing such that it conveyed at a glance what her brand was about. Second; it needed to have an ecommerce component that accepted payments in the currency of her region and lastly; and it needed to be delivered in a week or less because she was looking to do a grand lunch for her business.
First I had a consultation call with the client to establishes the specifics for the project. Next I put together a semi-functional design within three days using Squarespace and sent it to her for her to visualize and provide feedback on what she wanted.

Design review and feedback

After sending the sample to the client for review, she was intrigued by the design as it capture for her what she had imagined her website to look like. She provided feedback and made some design requests. For instance, she wanted the products displayed on her shop main page to feature a CTA button like "Buy Now". Subsequently, there were no call to action (CTAs) as a design decision due to the fact that each product had at least 4 variations with individual prices but that was later included in the final design.

Challenges - change in design process

Much later on in the design stage; at the point of setting up the website for e-commerce capabilities. It was discovered that Squarespace did not support the Nigerian currency, Naira (₦) in any of the payment gateways it offered hence this stalled the design process for a few days.
There were two possible solutions; 1) register with another e-commerce platform with payments gateways that supports the Naira currency and integrate it with Squarespace which would mean double subscription. 2) I could have the website designed on a new platform that provides payment support for Naira.
I went with the second option as it made financial sense seeing that I would only have to pay for one solution but that also meant I had to design the website again from scratch. However, that didn't take long to do because I had all the media files so it was just a matter of copy - paste and upload.

Final Design Execution and Handoff.

Within two weeks the website was completed and handed off to the client, featuring a fully functioning e-commerce component with the appropriate payment gateway integration. In addition, copy right material and promotional content were provided for the website as a curtesy experience for the client. The final design execution was carried out in two weeks due to last minutes design decisions and requests that the client made. Overall, the client was extremely pleased with the design and was eager to start making sales on her website.
For proper handoff, the client was giving an onboarding tour of her website to educate her on the e-commerce features and how to use it. As well as how to manage content on her website; from modifying present content to adding new ones.
