A digital tool for learning American Sign Language

Why ASL?

Accessibility is incredibly important to me, so I wanted to create a portfolio piece that centered around that passion. I wanted to envision a world where the world is more accessible for the deaf community, whether that's helping a deaf person learn ASL for themselves, or for a hearing person to learn to communicate.

It started with who would use this app...

Marissa is one of the personas that I created. In her instance, she's a hearing person, while her new child was born deaf. I pictured her using this tool in order to better communicate with and teach her own child ASL.
That led me to her user journey. How would she use this app in her day-to-day life and how would it make her feel?

Wireframes

I began with a paper wireframe, then moved on to the digital wireframe. That helped me envision what the lesson process would look like. From choosing a lesson, to taking it, then taking a quiz.

High-Fidelity Design

After finishing these designs, I was able to create a prototype that I tested with a few users to gain feedback. I then revised the app and completed it!
