Piglet, Postcards & Other Sacrifices Book Design & Illustration Charmaine Bingwa  2026
The cover introduces the piglet as the recurring
visual figure of the collection — playful,
vulnerable and slightly absurd.
The illustrations were kept loose, imperfect and
slightly awkward.
Rather than illustrating the poems literally, they
create small visual interruptions — moments of
humour, vulnerability and silence.
The book opens quietly, giving the reader a
simple dedication before introducing the
first poem.
The typography balances a narrow
contemporary display face with a traditional
serif for the poems.
The contrast gives the book two voices: a
playful and immediate exterior, and a quieter,
more intimate reading experience inside.

Piglet, Postcards & Other Sacrifices is a poetry collection by Charmaine Bingwa, moving between childhood, desire, family mythology, appetite and survival. I developed the book design around a contrast between restrained editorial typography and loose, hand-drawn imagery. The visual language stays playful and intimate on the surface, while leaving space for the darker weight of the poems. Book design, editorial design, typography & illustration.
