Introduction

The Habit Builder Mobile App project focuses on designing a mobile application to support remote workers in establishing and maintaining healthy habits while working from home. This case study highlights the user research, problem statement, proposed solution, and design process involved in creating an app that promotes productivity, well-being, and work-life balance.
My Role: UX/UI Designer, UX Researcher.

Project Overview

The objective of this project is to design and develop a mobile application that helps remote workers build habits to improve their productivity and well-being. The application will provide users with a range of features to help them establish and maintain healthy habits, such as setting goals, tracking progress, and receiving reminders.

Target Users

The target audience for the Habit Builder Mobile Application is remote workers who struggle with establishing and maintaining healthy habits due to the challenges of remote work, such as lack of structure and social support.

Problem Statement

As more and more people work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining healthy habits and well-being has become a challenge for many. Working from home can lead to increased sedentary behavior, irregular meal times, and less social interaction, all of which can negatively impact physical and mental health.
The goal of this project is to create a mobile app that motivates users to develop healthy habits and maintain their well-being while working from home. The app should help users stay self-aware and self-caring, and provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction throughout the day.
To achieve this goal, the app will address several challenges, such as:
Many people working from home spend long hours sitting in front of a computer, which can lead to a lack of physical activity and an increased risk of health problems such as obesity and cardiovascular disease.
When working from home, it's easy to fall into the habit of snacking all day or skipping meals altogether. This can lead to poor nutrition and decreased energy levels.
Working from home can be isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness and decreased mental well-being.
Difficulty in maintaining a work-life balance: When working from home, it can be challenging to separate work and personal time, leading to stress and burnout.

User Research

To design an app that truly meets the needs of Mihai(User)--, I conducted extensive research to gain a deep understanding of their habits, motivations, and pain points. The research will include the following methods:
Remote workers struggle with staying motivated and maintaining a routine.
Many remote workers feel isolated and disconnected from their colleagues.
Finding time for self-care activities can be challenging for remote workers.
There is a need for a tool to help remote workers set and achieve their goals.

Competitor Analysis

We Have 2 competitors: Todoist, Habitica. We will look at the user flow, user interface (UI), and overall UX of each app.
Todoist:
Strengths:
User-friendly interface: Todoist has a simple and intuitive design that makes it easy for users to navigate and create tasks.
Quick task creation: Users can quickly create tasks and subtasks, set due dates, and assign labels to them.
Organizational features: Todoist offers features such as reminders, recurring tasks, and the ability to create sub-projects, allowing users to stay organized.
Integration with other apps: Todoist integrates with other popular apps like Google Calendar, Trello, and Zapier, making it easy for users to manage their tasks from different platforms.
Weaknesses:
Lack of habit-building features: Todoist is primarily focused on task management and doesn't have many features specifically geared towards habit-building.
Basic design: While Todoist's design is user-friendly, it can also be seen as basic and lacking visual appeal.
2. Habitica:
Strengths:
Gamification approach: Habitica gamifies habit-building by turning daily tasks into a role-playing game. Users can earn rewards for completing tasks and build a virtual avatar as they progress, making habit-building more engaging and fun.
Social element: Habitica allows users to join groups and compete with others, creating a sense of community and accountability.
Customization: Habitica offers a wide range of customization options, including custom rewards, avatars, and habits, allowing users to tailor the app to their specific needs.
Weaknesses:
Overwhelming design: Habitica's design can be overwhelming, with a lot of information and options available. This can make it difficult for some users to navigate and use the app effectively.
Not suitable for all users: Habitica's gamification approach may not be suitable for all users, particularly those who don't enjoy games or competition.

Conclusion

Based on this additional analysis, we can further differentiate our app by offering a more personalized approach to coaching and support for developing healthy habits, and providing a more comprehensive approach to overall well-being. We will also aim to be more accessible to users who may not want to subscribe to a paid service, and provide a seamless user experience by integrating with other apps and devices.
I have tried to give the app a holistic approach, combining features for physical fitness, mental well-being, and work-life balance, and providing personalized coaching and support to keep users motivated and accountable.

Solution

App Description: A habit tracking app designed for digital nomads working from home to help them maintain a healthy routine and achieve their goals.
Features:
Simple and intuitive user interface
Customizable habit tracking with reminders and progress tracking
Motivation prompts and rewards to keep users engaged
Integration with other productivity tools such as fitness trackers and calendars.
Onboarding: When the user opens the app for the first time, they are presented with a welcome screen that explains the app's purpose and benefits. They are then prompted to create a new account or login with an existing one. If they are a new user, they will be taken through an onboarding process that asks them a few questions about their personal information, such as age, gender, and height, to personalize the app's features.
Habit Selection: After onboarding, the user is prompted to select which healthy habits they want to focus on. They can choose from a list of common habits, such as drinking more water, getting enough sleep, or exercising regularly. They can also add their own custom habits if they don't see what they're looking for on the list.
Habit Tracker: Once the user has selected their healthy habits, they are taken to a dashboard that shows their progress towards each habit. They can input how well they did with each habit each day and track their progress over time. They can also set reminders to help them stay on track.
Mental Well-being: The app also includes a section focused on promoting mental well-being. This section can include meditation exercises, stress-relief tips, or journal prompts to help users manage stress and anxiety.
Physical Fitness: The app also includes a section focused on promoting physical fitness. This section can include workout plans, tracking physical activity, or reminders to take breaks and stretch throughout the day.
Work-Life Balance: The app also includes a section focused on promoting a healthy work-life balance. This section can include time management tools, productivity tips, or resources for managing remote work.
Profile Settings: The user can adjust their profile settings, such as their notification preferences or app theme.

Outcome

The outcome of the above case study is the development and launch of a habit tracking mobile application specifically designed for remote workers to help them establish and maintain healthy habits, improve productivity, and overall well-being. The app will provide users with features such as setting goals, tracking progress, and receiving reminders to help them establish and maintain healthy habits, while addressing challenges such as lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, social isolation, and work-life balance issues. Through user research, a user persona was created, and a competitor analysis was conducted to ensure that the app is tailored to the needs of the target audience and offers unique features that differentiate it from competitors. The ultimate goal of the app is to help remote workers develop and maintain healthy habits and well-being while working from home, providing a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction throughout the day.
