AWAS
A COLLECTION OF 4 MARATHI POEMS EXPRESSED THROUGH CALLIGRAPHY AND EDITORIAL DESIGN
( project overview )

( deliverables )
Awas is a collection of four Marathi poems exploring darkness, loss and the fading of hope. The project brings the emotional intensity of the verses into the visual language through expressive calligraphic illustrations, allowing the typography to become part of the storytelling. The title Awas (meaning a moonless night) is shaped like a shooting star, symbolising the brief presence and eventual death of hope against an endless dark sky.

The colors vermilion, black, and white in the collection amplify the raw intensity of the verses by symbolizing contrasting emotions -

BLACK (#000000) represents darkness, the endless void,
WHITE (#ffffff) highlights emptiness.

The first poem reflects the feeling of being lonely even when surrounded by people, and the longing to be alone. For this illustration, I placed all the letters inside squares to create a sense of order and confinement. A mysterious circle breaks this pattern, adding an unsettling and slightly eerie element to the composition.
गर्दीत एकटेपणा बोचतो,
आणि एकांत शोधतो.
Amidst the crowd, one feels isolated,
And seeks solitude

The poem explores how temporary people and appearances can be. The facades we create and the impressions we leave behind can disappear just as quickly. In the illustration, circles represent faces, partly covered by red strokes that act as masks. The masks are fragile and can easily slip away, revealing what lies underneath.
Faces (People) are just masks,
Some of wax, some of clay.
Either they’ll melt today,
Or they’ll fade away tomorrow,
But in a moment, they'll lose,
All will dissolve,
Seemingly real,
Yet in the next moment,
they won't be there.
