The Start

On April 2024, an old client contacted me to piece together a video they've been been planning for quite some time now. I was delighted to hear back from her as I've had a great time doing a past creative project.
Now, she returned with a proposal to create something a bit bigger and different from what we've made before.
Intrigued, I asked how "different" it was.
She then revealed to me that it's a Fan Video for the talented South Korean boy band, BTOB.

I initially thought it was a simple but heartwarming video- to be posted on their social media page of their fan group (BTOB Philippines) to commemorate something special.
Much much later, as I learned about the video's sequence more, I was surprised to learn that it was going to be played in front of thousands of Filipino Melodys and BTOB themselves at the SM Mall of Asia Arena at their meet-and-greet on April 7, 2024 as they land in the country for the first time.
The pressure was on but a part of me felt excited.
It dawned on me- I was suddenly tasked to be the bridge of the fandom and the artist they love.
To unify Filipino Melodys across the Philippine archipelago for this one special day.
To convey what BTOB meant to them.
And to show how much love was bottled up throughout the years.
My focus now shifted to questions such as: "how?" and "how soon?"
With additional challenges of having my own academic priorities at the time, self-filmed limited footage of varying quality, and needing several drafts to be checked by the media company supervising the meet-and greet, it was fair to ask if we can really pull this off in such a tight timeframe?
Thankfully, the concept was solid.

The Concept

The video was conceptualized by several key members of the fan group and with the main objectives being:
to showcase the scope of the fanbase
to highlight their excitement
to emphasize the role BTOB had in the lives of Filipino Melodys
and to celebrate their first ever arrival in the Philippines.
To execute this, I keenly studied the branding of BTOB's publication materials. I was also provided several promotional material to serve as a reference as I created graphics and assets needed for the video.
Each of the goals had sequences in the video; but the whole video will build up to a sing-along with the fan group and the band.

Visual Style and Color Palettes

Palettes such as sky blue matched with white to convey their lighthearted and endearing nature were used in sincere scenes visualized as pages of a subtle but moving and dynamic scrapbook. An example of this are scenes in which Melody's describe what BTOB means in their life or to emphasize the present.
A colored version of the geometric modern typeface, SUIT, was incredibly helpful as it had Korean characters. It also accentuated the lightheartedness of the overall video for both short and lengthy captions such as the image below.
In contrast, the classic black and white were used in nostalgic and serious scenes- specifically, in clips that were from the distant past of both the band and the fan group. The sense of nostalgia grows even more as Endless Melody plays and was the last song proceeding into a collage of photos prepared by the fan group.

Personal Favorite Part

One of the most memorable parts of the video is the photo slideshow by different melody's across the country- as they take pics of their locale as it slowly leads up to a collage with Endless Melody playing in the background to be sung by everyone at the venue.

BTOB's Reaction

As the video finished with this collage, I was anxious waiting for the day of the meet and greet to happen. My client and her group filmed their reaction and it was sublime.
Watch on YouTube
Having known that something I made was watched by one of the biggest boy bands in the world and adoring fans was a surreal experience. While I may not be a fan of BTOB myself, conversing with the fan group and watching the raw self-filmed footage of some of the members allowed me to understand the emotions they feel.
I felt responsible to a degree in delivering their message and feelings to the band. And doing this project was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I had the pleasure of doing. Despite many challenges surrounding the project were present, I was glad to be a be able to deliver a sincere video.
