ABOUT THE APP

BeWell is a wellness web app that lets the users track their health with simple steps from logging their data, creating personalized programs, educating themselves on health and wellness to downloading and sharing their reports. It was created as a capstone project for my UX Design Bootcamp and the first app I ever created from scratch.

PROBLEM

People are finding it difficult to tackle between multiple apps to track their health and find the apps overwhelming to use

SOLUTION

Develop an app that will combine multiple functionalities, so that they do not need to download multiple apps to track their health and wellness while not getting overwhelmed by the amount of content and features.

MAIN FEATURES

RESEARCH

I started with a competitive analysis to to understand how the similar apps works, what they do great and they lack. Based on the analysis of multiple apps including, Googlefit, MyFitnessPal and Fitbit I came across with two major issues: excessive content overload and complicated UI.

USER INTERVIEWS AND SURVEYS

Interviews and surveys gave me a much better understanding of the users and their current issues with the apps that they’ve been using. After gathering enough information through the interviews and surveys, I decided to move on to the next step which was creating the personas.
2 weeks of Research, 51 survey respondents and 3 interviews
80% of the participants used at least 2 apps to track their health
Stress is a major issue for 70% of the participants and all of the interviewees
%76 of the participants are frustrated by having to use multiple apps
Major reasons to use health and wellness apps: fitness, meditation, weight loss, sleep tracking menstrual cycle tracking
%67 of the users think that an educational section is/would be useful

PERSONAS

Based on the research, interviews and surveys, following personas were created.

JOURNEY MAPS

Once I created the personas, I moved on to the next step which was journey maps followed by the user flows which helped me to visualize the user flow as well as empathize with the user even more.

SITEMAP AND CARDSORTING

9 people participated in the card sorting, 19 cards in total and average completion time was 2.5 minutes.
This part of the process was challenging as I failed to give the participants adequate information on each card as well as the app. Although there was no major changes, it would haven been a lot more efficient if I had made a clearer explanation.

ITERATIONS

USER TESTING

6 participants were recruited and approximately 30-50 minutes spent with each testing.
Main challenge for this part was the time limit on Zoom, and I had to create additional sessions which for one of them I forgot to record and had to write down whatever I could remember from the second half of the testing as a result.
Based on the interviews I’ve created an Affinity Map as well as a Rainbow SpreadSheet to analyze the results. After that, I made some changes to the design based on the results:

TAKEAWAYS

This work was my capstone project for the CareerFoundry UX Design Program and it was the first app that I’ve created from scratch. Although I was not able to complete the whole app with all the features, it was a great experience to learn more about myself, and the whole research and design process. There were a lot of challenges that I came across especially during the design and usability testing processes but I think the biggest challenge was to decide on creating an extensive app with a great amount of features.
My key takeaways from this project:
Never rush your ideas, always think through
Ongoing user research, interviews and testings are key to a successful product
Always carefully listen and take as much notes as possible during interviews and testings
Always make sure that your process work is clear enough or it’s well explained during a study (ie: card sorting)
Make sure that there’s a reasoning behind everything you do
During Usability Testings, make sure the participant is feeling comfortable and relaxed.
