Web Design Mentorship & Portfolio Development
Helping an aspiring designer find her direction and begin building a focused web design portfolio through ongoing mentorship.
The starting point
She came to me with a broad ambition: “I want to work in design.”
I asked to see her portfolio. She shared a collection of earlier visual work, including print and display materials. This gave us a starting point for discussing her experience and what she wanted to create next.
The first question was simple: what kind of design interested her—and was she ready to build a new portfolio around it?
Making the options tangible
I shared references and examples to introduce different possibilities within design. We used them to explore what appealed to her and which kinds of projects she wanted to try.
Through these conversations, the direction became clearer: she wanted to make websites.
Defining the portfolio direction
With that focus established, we could approach the portfolio with a clearer purpose. Her next projects needed to demonstrate the kind of work she wanted to pursue.
I helped her move from exploring possibilities to learning web design and creating her first projects in Framer.
Learning through practice
Fine Selfies and AZS are early projects in this process. They belong to the mentee; my contribution is the guidance and teaching supporting her development.
The mentorship is ongoing. As she continues learning, the portfolio is taking shape around a specific discipline and a growing body of relevant work.
Progress so far
A broad interest in design has developed into a chosen direction, first web projects, and continued practice.
My role
Initial portfolio review, design-field orientation, reference curation, portfolio direction, and ongoing web design mentorship.
Project authorship
The earlier visual work and new website projects are the mentee’s work. This case documents my contribution as her mentor.
