Overview

A comprehensive UX/UI case study for a fintech product — covering the complete design process from user research and competitive analysis through to high-fidelity UI and developer handoff.

The Challenge

Financial products carry a high trust burden. Users need to feel confident that their money and data are safe before they'll engage. The design had to communicate security and reliability while still feeling modern and easy to use.

Research Phase

Competitive analysis of 6 leading fintech apps
User interviews with 10 participants across different financial literacy levels
Affinity mapping to identify core pain points
Jobs-to-be-done framework applied to primary use cases
Key findings:
Users abandon onboarding when asked for too much information upfront
Trust signals (security badges, bank logos) significantly increase completion rates
Transaction history needs to be scannable in under 5 seconds

Design Process

User flows for 5 core journeys (onboarding, send money, receive money, view history, manage account)
Low-fidelity wireframes validated with 5 users
High-fidelity UI with a full design system
Accessibility audit (WCAG AA compliance)
Annotated handoff specs for engineering

Key Design Decisions

Progressive onboarding — collect only what's needed at each step
Biometric authentication on the lock screen for speed and security
Color-coded transaction types (green for income, red for expenses)
Spending insights surfaced proactively on the home screen
Clear error states with actionable recovery paths
