Designing a mobile wallet experience for instant tip access.

Today is a fintech product built for hospitality workers who need faster access to their earned gratuities. As part of the XTM Inc. design team, I contributed to the UX/UI across iOS and web — helping turn manual tip distribution into a secure, easy-to-use digital wallet experience.

PROBLEM

In the hospitality industry, gratuity distribution still relies on cumbersome, manual processes that create frustration and inefficiency at every level.
Managers must collect, sort, and reconcile paper tip logs or spreadsheets often leading to errors, delays of several days or weeks, and time-consuming administrative overhead.
Meanwhile, staff face uncertainty and financial stress as they wait for their hard-earned tips to trickle through a slow, opaque system. This outdated approach not only robs employees of timely access to their earnings but also diverts valuable management resources away from guest-facing priorities, highlighting a clear need for a streamlined, digital alternative.

The Need? Core requirements Today App must fulfill

Hospitality workers juggle unpredictable hours, cash tips, and tight budgets—and they need a solution that empowers them financially. Today App addresses four fundamental needs:

User problem statement:

“When I get tips, I want to be able to get those gratuities right away and into my bank account the same day so I can use it to pay my rent, bills, or going out.”

Solution snapshot

A unified wallet for on-demand payouts and financial empowerment for the hospitality industry.
Dive into Playlog’s core flows → from the very first welcome screen through to live event creation and see how every tap is optimized to get users sharing memories faster. In under a minute, hosts can name their event, lock down privacy settings, add fun prompts, and generate a shareable link or QR code. With clear visual cues and one-screen setup, Playlog removes friction so users spend less time configuring and more time connecting.

User persona

Background: Bryan has spent the last five years crafting cocktails and making people feel welcome behind the bar in downtown Toronto. A marketing graduate by training, he’s organized and tech-savvy, but long shifts and inconsistent tip pools have left him juggling cash, spreadsheets, and clunky payout tools just to cover rent and daily expenses.
Goals & Needs: Instant access to tips: Bryan wants his gratuities in his wallet the moment they’re earned—no more waiting days or weeks.
Clear budgeting: With rent due and bills stacking up, he needs real-time visibility into what he’s earned and how much he can safely spend.
Seamless payments: From grabbing groceries to splitting tabs with friends, he expects a wallet that works anywhere—online, in-store, and at the ATM.
Financial empowerment: Without a traditional bank account, Bryan relies on Today App to bridge the gap between cashless spending and essential banking services.
Frustrations: Manual tip pools that require managers to tally paper logs and trigger payouts days later. Forgotten or misplaced cash tips after a busy shift. Having to juggle multiple apps or cash for bill payments and peer-to-peer transfers. “I just want my hard-earned tips in my pocket right now so I can cover rent, hit happy hour, or save for a weekend getaway without extra fees or hassle.”

Product Background

Filling a niche in the gig-pay ecosystem
In restaurants and bars, gratuities flow unpredictably from credit-card slips to digital orders and end up stuck in manual tip pools that managers must tally, reconcile, and distribute days or weeks later. Meanwhile, many service workers lack full banking access, forcing them to juggle cash, checks, and off-shift drop-offs just to get paid. This friction not only erodes employee trust and financial stability but also burdens operators with costly administrative overhead. This tool allows employers to automate and streamline on-demand payments to employees.
