The performance footwear industry is dominated by synthetic materials, limiting the integration of natural fibers despite growing demand for:

Sustainability and natural material solutions
Enhanced comfort without compromising performance
Brands faced a key challenge:
Lack of manufacturing solutions capable of combining natural fibers with engineered performance zones
This created an opportunity to rethink footwear uppers through advanced knitting technologies and material innovation.
Solution
Enabled the development of a new generation of seamless knitted footwear uppers, combining:
Advanced wool-based yarn engineering (Südwolle Group)
Specialized fiber twisting and construction techniques for performance enhancement
Santoni 3D intarsia seamless knitting technology
Key innovations:
Creation of fully engineered, seamless uppers, ready for direct application to the sole
Body-mapped construction, allowing different yarns and structures to be placed precisely where needed
Integration of breathability, elasticity, and support zones within a single knitted structure
Reduction of production steps through single-process upper manufacturing
Impact
Demonstrated the viability of natural fiber-based performance footwear
Improved comfort, breathability, and moisture management through engineered wool structures
Enabled seamless, just-in-time production with reduced manual intervention

My Role
Led the translation of material innovation into product application, combining technical understanding with business and product strategy.
Acted as interface between yarn development (Südwolle) and seamless manufacturing technology (Santoni)
Contributed to the development and positioning of wool-based performance solutions for footwear brands
Guided yarn selection, construction, and application strategies to meet performance requirements
Supported product development and storytelling, translating technical features into brand-relevant benefits
Contributed to positioning the solution as a scalable alternative to synthetic uppers
