Ian Knight's Work | ContraWork by Ian KnightIan Knight
I build custom web automations and marketing strategies.
The client is the Common Interest Community Standards Council (cic-sc.org (http://cic-sc.org)), a standards and education organization for HOA board members and community association managers. They needed two things in one platform. The public side publishes governance standards, research and a free library. The business side sells and delivers books, courses and exams, and runs member accounts.
I built it in Next.js with Clerk for sign-in, Supabase for data, Stripe for payments and Resend for email. Members get a dashboard with video lessons, module quizzes, a timed final exam drawn from a 200-question pool, certificates, ebooks and receipts. Behind it is an admin back office for members, orders, cohorts, waitlists, support tickets and course access. The site is live and has had 300+ updates since May.
Three problems stood out. First, putting checkout next to the standards made the organization look like a vendor instead of an authority. I split it into a non-commercial standards site and a separate studio where every sale happens, with free sign-up to reach the gated content. Second, paid access had to unlock without anyone stepping in. I connected Stripe's payment notifications so purchases unlock courses and ebooks automatically, refunds take access back, and failures are logged instead of failing silently. Third, deploys were stalling because large media files were being uploaded with every build. Excluding them brought deploys down to about 2 minutes. The client is a founder-led commercial landscaping and irrigation company in Houston. Most of its work comes from HOAs and commercial properties. They were using a 2020-era site that looked like a residential lawn service. The goal was to look established to property managers and boards and to turn site visits into bid requests.
I rebuilt the brand mark and the site in Next.js. The main feature is a 4-step "24-Hour Bid Request" form. Its community field searches all 5,256 registered associations in the region, so a manager can find their property in a few keystrokes. I also added a resources library of templates managers can download: an RFP, a scope of work, a bid matrix and an annual calendar.
The hardest part came after launch. The rebrand meant moving to a new domain, and the registrar's default DNS records would have quietly broken both the site and company email. I cleared those out, rebuilt the DNS by hand, and set up permanent redirects from every old address. I also filed Google's Change of Address so the move wouldn't cost search rankings. Then I ran an SEO audit. It showed only 1 of 15 pages was indexed and the hero video was slowing phones down, and it gave the client a prioritized list of fixes. Level Up Life Fitness is a Houston personal trainer, NASM certified and a certified nutritionist, who coaches clients in his private studio, at their gym, at their home, and live online. He needed a website that turns visitors into booked consults, and a back office (ERP) that brings booking, virtual sessions, attendance, packages and payments into one place instead of a patchwork of apps.
For the website, our first design was dark and kinetic, with heavy motion. After his review we rebuilt it clean, light and photographic, using his own footage. The site is consult-first, with no public prices, and mobile-first, scoring 95+ on Google Lighthouse.
The biggest challenge was virtual training: it had to stay free. Google Meet can't be embedded in a website, so we designed the client portal to handle everything around the call. Clients sign in, see their sessions, and a Join button opens Meet 10 minutes before start. Attendance then feeds package tracking and billing. Google's app approval can take weeks, so Phase 1 uses one standing Meet link per client and needs no approval at all.
We also designed ownership in from day one. The domain, business email, hosting, Stripe and Google accounts are all in the coach's name, not ours, and an ownership register shows exactly who holds what. It also gives a preview into one of my client's body of work-- their website, marketing strategy, etc. Come on through my front door! tx-ae.com (https://tx-ae.com).
