Have you noticed? LALATOWN has been quietly growing. Every new illustration brings a few more neighbors, a few more cozy little places, and another tiny story waiting to happen. Before I knew it, the town had become so full of wonderful little details that they simply had to move into their own brush set. So today, I’m welcoming the LALATOWN Village Builder to the neighborhood. Inside you’ll meet new friends—the expectant mother picking sweet plums, Berry Rain, the Hanbok Carriage, the Sunshine Palace watching over the town like a gentle guardian, a noodle shop whose sign is, naturally, made of noodles, leafy perilla umbrellas, and many other whimsical little corners that make LALATOWN feel like home. These brushes were lovingly gathered from This Is How LALATOWN Lives and This Is How LALATOWN Glows, so now you can borrow little pieces of the town and build stories of your own. I’m expanding LALATOWN into a new neighborhood inspired by Bukchon, one of my favorite places in Korea. While planning the illustrations, I realized something important: if I waited until the painting was finished, it would be much harder to turn those little details into Procreate brushes later. So I decided to create the brushes before I started painting. This collection is made up of the little Korean treasures I always wished I had close at hand while illustrating—traditional motifs, decorative patterns, pottery details, lucky symbols, and small objects that quietly tell a story. Many of the traditional motifs were inspired by Korean decorative art and historical patterns. Rather than copying them, I reimagined them as part of the world of LALATOWN. Some became tiny earrings because I’ve always loved earrings and thought, “Wouldn’t this make a beautiful little charm?” Others became borders, ornaments, or decorative details that I know I’ll use throughout my future illustrations. Lucky Days & Little Signs The LALATOWN Monthly Auspicious Calendar · July 2026 Hello, neighbors. As I promised in the June edition, here is our July Lucky Days & Little Signs calendar. July is just around the corner, and I thought it would be fun to share another little piece of Korean tradition with you. If you’ve been visiting LALATOWN for a while, you probably know that I love collecting the small stories people carry through generations. Some are recipes. Some are neighborhood sayings. Some are simply little beliefs that make everyday life feel more thoughtful. This calendar is one of them. In Korea, many people still look at the lunar calendar when choosing special days. Weddings, moving to a new home, opening a business, or even beginning an important project are sometimes planned around auspicious dates. Another traditional belief is that, on certain days, particular directions are best avoided for major activities. Whether you see these traditions as folklore, cultural wisdom, or simply beautiful stories, they’ve always been part of Korean everyday life. For me, this calendar isn’t about predicting the future. It’s a gentle reminder to move through life with a little more awareness—to pause, notice the season, and remember that we’re sharing this world with nature rather than trying to control it. When I was in middle school, I remember my mother suddenly developing severe pain in her leg. A local fortune teller asked her an unexpected question: “Did you recently move any living plants?” She had. The fortune teller suggested offering a little water mixed with coarse salt to the plants she had moved, explaining that she may have unknowingly disturbed the spirit of the place. My mother followed the suggestion, and over the following days she felt much better. Was it coincidence? Faith? Tradition? Or simply a meaningful ritual? I still don’t know. But I’ve never forgotten that story. Even today, whenever I see construction beginning, trees being dug up, or the ground being disturbed, I find myself paying a little more attention. Perhaps it’s only habit. Perhaps it’s respect. Either way, these small traditions remind me that the earth isn’t just scenery—it has its own quiet presence. That feeling inspired this little calendar. The green dots mark days that are traditionally considered especially lucky. The letters (E, S, W, N) simply point to directions that some traditional calendars suggest being mindful of on that day. They’re not rules. They’re little signs. Tiny conversations with an old tradition that has traveled through generations. If you’re curious about Korean folk beliefs and the spiritual traditions surrounding nature and place, there’s one book I warmly recommend. Years ago, I even had the opportunity to help edit part of this book, and it’s still one of the most thoughtful introductions I’ve found on the subject. Whether you follow these traditions or simply enjoy learning about different cultures, I hope this little calendar adds a bit of curiosity, imagination, and kindness to your July. In LALATOWN, even aprons apply for new jobs. It started with a gift—a bright red Asiana Airlines apron embroidered with lotus flowers. I loved it instantly but never wore it. Too elegant for cooking, too shy for storage. So one day, years ago, I gave her a promotion. From apron to pouch. ✈️ I kept the pocket, of course. That’s where secrets belong. I lined her with yellow cotton covered in tiny white flowers—the kind that instantly forgives all bad moods. When I finished, she clicked shut like she meant it. That little snap! was her way of saying, “I’m ready for my next flight.” And then she waited. For years. Until today, when I finally gave her a passport to this journal. Welcome, apron-pouch. You’ve officially cleared customs into LALATOWN. 🌈 This is one of many handmade bags I’ve created over the years. Most of them begin with something forgotten: an apron, a piece of fabric, a dress, or a garment that has reached the end of one life and is ready for another. I love transforming ordinary materials into objects with new stories to tell. People often ask where I bought my bags. Their surprise is always my favorite part. “No, I made it.” In LALATOWN, almost everything gets a second chance.
