Competitive & Customer Research Understanding a market requires more than knowing who the competitors are. The more useful question is: Why do customers choose one option over another — and where is there still room to compete? Competitive and customer research can help connect these two sides of the market. I typically examine: • competitive landscape and positioning • products, services and value propositions • pricing and commercial signals where publicly available • customer reviews and recurring pain points • demand signals and buying behavior • gaps between what competitors offer and what customers appear to need The objective is not simply to build a list of competitors. It is to understand how the market actually works — where companies are similar, where they are differentiated, what customers value, and where potential opportunities or risks may exist. Good competitive research describes the market. Better research helps you decide what to do with that information.

This year, I wrote 48 posts on Substack, 200 on Linkedin, reached readers in 66 countries, and had over 300k impressions across platforms. None of it was overnight. All of it was slow and steady. I just published a full breakdown of my first year writing online — including analytics, mistakes, and patterns. https://open.substack.com/pub/carolinapoll/p/a-year-of-writing-in-public-what?r=3b1q9&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Before investing heavily in a new market, product, or business opportunity, there is a simpler question worth answering first: Does the opportunity deserve deeper investigation? A focused screening can help separate promising signals from assumptions before significant time and money are committed. I typically look at several layers: • market structure and current trends • competitive environment • customer and demand signals • positioning and business model • key dependencies and potential risks • evidence supporting — or challenging — the original hypothesis The goal is not to produce a massive report. It is to create a compact, evidence-based picture of what appears to be true, what remains uncertain, and what should be investigated next. Sometimes the most valuable research is not the research that tells you where to invest more. It is the research that tells you where not to.
