Understanding a market requires more than knowing who the competitors are.
The more useful question is:
Why do customers choose one option over another — and where is there still room to compete?
Competitive and customer research can help connect these two sides of the market.
I typically examine:
• competitive landscape and positioning
• products, services and value propositions
• pricing and commercial signals where publicly available
• customer reviews and recurring pain points
• demand signals and buying behavior
• gaps between what competitors offer and what customers appear to need
The objective is not simply to build a list of competitors.
It is to understand how the market actually works — where companies are similar, where they are differentiated, what customers value, and where potential opportunities or risks may exist.
Good competitive research describes the market.
Better research helps you decide what to do with that information.
