Everyone can spot the AI image with three arms. Almost nobody agrees on what makes an AI output actually good.
That's the finding from Contra Labs' Human Creativity Benchmark, and we dug into it on this week's UnContrad with Alli from the Contra team.
Past "obviously broken," the professional graders split. Some killed outputs over the typography. Others forgave the type because the composition was worth keeping. Same image, different verdicts, both senior.
The tools flipped depending on the phase too. Strong at ideation, useless at refinement. Ask for one explicit change and three other things move.
My take from the episode: working with AI is design negotiating. You won't one-shot it. Some days I can't ten-shot it. It nails the majority, you decide what you can live with, and the real skill is knowing when to stop.
The pattern held across video, brand, ad, product, and web designers. Nothing one-shots yet. Which is exactly why the designer in the driver's seat still decides what ships.
Full conversation with Alli: what Contra Labs is, the benchmark findings, and where AI actually fits a professional workflow.
