At Bowlero, getting frontline workers to finish their training was a constant battle. So we made it a game. Quizzes, leaderboards, venue rivalries, real rewards. As Head of Product Design I led it hands-on, from employee interviews to the illustration style. The full case study is finally written up:

Turning frontline training into a game with venue rivalries is a smart angle. Did the illustration style come from the employee interviews?

Yeah it did, the data viz style was driven by the team's use of post it notes. We wanted to make post its that felt more dynamic and personalized to that specific person's performance. We noticed the post it notes when we were doing interviews with potential users on site.

People sometimes need follow-up and motivation to accomplish their various tasks, so the idea was great and well-designed.

Frontline training at Bowlero needed stakes, not more slides. Quizzes, leaderboards, and venue rivalries tied to real rewards is a product story I rarely see documented this clearly.

Venue rivalries is a smart touch.

quizzes plus venue rivalries is smart, frontline people will grind for bragging rights way harder than for a cert

Yeah we were surprised by how they took to it. We had ways they could unlock different ornaments for their avatar. Also top 3 scorers regardless of venue got something extra. Micro-incentives really do drive performance.
