Everyone in this conversation blames the founder for making 2am gut calls. I don't think that's fair, and I think it's the wrong target.
The founder isn't the problem. The founder is the only person actually willing to own the decision when three systems disagree and nobody else will. That's not a failure of leadership. That's a business that never built a role for the job that actually needed doing.
Blaming the founder's instinct is easier than admitting the org chart has a hole in it. Marketing has an owner. Inventory has an owner. Finance has an owner. The seam between all three, where a real, expensive decision has to get made under pressure, has no owner at all.
So the founder fills it, by default, at the worst possible hour, with the least information, because somebody has to and nobody else is positioned to.
The fix was never "the founder needs better instincts." It's "this seam needs an owner who isn't the founder." Until that exists, every 2am call is going to look like a personal failure that was actually a structural one all along.
