A perfumer builds a scent in layers that don't even show up at the same time.
Top notes hit first and vanish within minutes, citrus, light florals, the thing you smell stepping into the store. Heart notes take over for the next few hours and carry the actual personality of the fragrance. Base notes, musk, wood, amber, are barely there at first and only bloom hours later, long after the top notes are gone. Nobody designs a bottle where every note tries to peak in the same second.
Most landing pages do the opposite. Headline, badge, countdown timer, chat bubble, three CTAs, all fighting to be the loudest thing on the screen in the same half-second. Nothing actually lands because everything's trying to be the top note.
I map pages the same way now: one thing allowed to hit first, one thing that carries the middle of the scroll, and one slow-build element, trust signals, deeper proof, that only needs to show up for the visitor who sticks around.
What's fighting to be the top note on your homepage that should really be sitting in the base?
