Hase is an interactive character designed to help people build healthier screen habits without feeling overly restricted.

Whenever a user opens a distracting app, Hase gives them just enough time to complete the task they selected. Once the timer expires, the app enters a cooloff period during which the app can’t be reopened. If the user genuinely needs more time, they can negotiate with Hase for an extension. Users are rewarded for successfully completing cooloff periods without reopening the app, and Hase celebrates their progress along the way.

Hase isn’t a decorative mascot; he’s central to the experience. Built in Rive, he grants time, negotiates extensions, celebrates successful cooloff periods, and responds to user actions through expressive animations and changing emotions. Rather than appearing in a single screen or animation, Hase is integrated throughout the app as the primary way users interact with its screen time system.

Haserupt is currently being tested with a small group of beta users. The early feedback has been encouraging: one user reduced their weekly social media screen time from 51 hours to 28 hours, while another shared that Hase helped them avoid late-night food orders triggered by Instagram. These early results have reinforced our belief that an interactive character can play a meaningful role in helping people build healthier digital habits.
