Anyone else miss Insaniquarium 🐟 🐟 🐟 ?
Well this time round for the Rive X Contra #characterchallenge, I've made a fully interactive aquarium.
The fish wander around naturally on their own, and have a dynamic hunger meter that changes their behavior depending on how hungry they are. Click the screen to drop some food, and they'll track it down.
Some of my favorite stuff under the hood:
- 2.5D Rigging: The fish rotate smoothly from side-to-side using Joysticks
- Proximity Cursor Tracking: The eyes not only follow the cursor, but only if it's close enough
- Interactive Plants: Using IK and Distance Constraints, I made plants that you can interact with the cursor
- Variable Speed: The fish doesn't just move fast across the screen like a PNG being moved, but the animation also accelerates realistically
- Editable Colors: Each fish can be customized on the fly

How I Built It :
This project was entirely designed and developed within Rive, utilizing its core features to create a seamless interactive experience:
State Machine Logic: I utilized Rive’s State Machine to manage complex logic, enabling the dashboard to trigger specific animations and data updates based on input changes.
Interactive Listeners: I implemented custom Listeners combined with Opaque Targets, allowing for direct, real-time user interaction with the dashboard buttons.
Dynamic Data Synchronization: The dashboard features synchronized animations where UI bars (Pollution, Energy, Water, Traffic) and text values update automatically to reflect the current city status.
Organic Character Animation: I achieved a living AI guardian effect by utilizing image sequences combined with breathing animation keyframes and cubic interpolation for smooth, realistic movement.
Emotional & Crisis Response: The system includes nuanced state transitions, such as accelerated eyeball movement during high-pollution (Red) alerts, providing immediate visual feedback on the city's health.

I created 20+ animations for Boop, a health and fitness app that turns walking into a fun, motivating competition.
The project includes an interactive onboarding system built with state machines, transitions, and view models, where changing values dynamically drives users between states. It also includes a responsive walk cycle and interactive notification activation designed to make the experience feel engaging and rewarding. You can explore even more animations throughout the app.

Feed the hungry cat!
For my first Rive project I wanted to create a cat that reacts to being fed. 3 States: like, dislike and confused. The animation was made with different state machines, bone structure, UI panel and sound on triggers.
It was a learning curve coming from a non-coding background After Effects animator, but I really like toe potential Rive has to offer when it comes to interactivity.
No go and feed the cat, he's hungry.
