In Jan, my Upwork account got nuked after 3+ years of work there.
I moved to Contra for commission-free payments, quality clients, and no competing with 50 people for a $200 job.
Today marks my 8th months. ~20 projects completed/invoiced.
$50,000 earned.
What worked for me:
Overdeliver.
Trust people.
Get very good at what you’re already good at.
Keep building cool stuff.
On to the next $50k.

Losing an account after 3 years is brutal, but 50K in 8 months somewhere better is the best kind of revenge. Not competing with 50 people for a $200 job might be the most underrated line in that whole story.

Getting your Upwork account banned after years of work is genuinely painful. The fact that you rebuilt to $50K in 8 months says a lot about your skills and approach. That line about not competing with 50 people for a $200 job hits different when you've been there.

I grew up around money without having it.
I learned early what looking like you belong does to how people treat you.
I drew paintings in every class I ever sat in instead of listening, a face is a few marks that settle what people believe about a person. I was drawing the problem I work on now.
I got fired more than once, I was a bad employee and a good builder.
I left the one job I liked because I wanted my own thing and the studio came out of that. A founder who has built something real and is still treated as small is standing in the room I grew up in.
So I read a company the way that room read me, at least from what it can see.
Hopefully ill reach there someday, with 0 currently 😟
