A lot of Shopify speed problems are not really image problems.
They’re script problems.
I often see stores with apps loading JavaScript on every page, even when the functionality is only needed in one place.
A review app might only matter on product pages.
A popup might only need to load after a delay.
A tracking or widget script might not need to block the initial render at all.
Before compressing every image again, I’d check:
• Which third-party scripts load site-wide
• Which apps are actually being used
• Which scripts can be delayed or conditionally loaded
• Whether old app code is still sitting in the theme
Speed optimization is often less about adding something new and more about removing unnecessary work.

Not every Shopify feature needs an app.
I often see stores using an app for something that could be handled with a small amount of custom Liquid.
That can mean:
• extra JavaScript loading on every page
• another monthly subscription
• more settings to maintain
• more chances of conflicts after theme updates
For things like product badges, conditional content, custom product information, collection labels, or simple promotional blocks, custom Liquid is often the cleaner solution.
Apps are great when they solve a complex problem.
But for small, store-specific functionality, adding another app can sometimes create more overhead than value.
The goal isn’t to avoid apps.
It’s to keep the Shopify stack as simple as the store actually needs.

A Shopify store can look premium and still make buying unnecessarily difficult.
I see this a lot.
The design looks polished, but customers still have to work too hard to make a decision.
A few common examples:
• Important product details are buried too far down the page
• Mobile users have to scroll around to find variants, sizing, or specifications
• Collection pages look clean but make product discovery harder
• Navigation reflects the store structure instead of how customers actually shop
This is why CRO is not always about changing button colors or adding urgency.
Sometimes the biggest improvement is simply reducing the amount of effort required to understand the product and move to the next step.
Good Shopify UX should make the buying decision feel obvious.
