Why Most DIY Stores Look Unprofessional!
Launching your own online store has never been easier. Platforms like Shopify, Wix, WooCommerce, and Squarespace make it possible for anyone to build a website without writing a single line of code.
But there is a difference between building a store and building a brand.
Many DIY stores struggle because they focus on getting online quickly instead of creating a professional shopping experience. Inconsistent colors, mismatched fonts, low quality product images, cluttered layouts, and confusing navigation can make a business appear less trustworthy, even if the products are excellent.
Another common mistake is copying templates without customizing them. When your store looks like hundreds of others, customers have little reason to remember your brand or choose you over a competitor.
Professional stores are designed with strategy. Every section has a purpose, from guiding visitors through the buying journey to building trust with reviews, clear messaging, and strong calls to action. Overview
I came across a Facebook post from a local fencing supplier looking for someone to build an e-commerce website. Instead of sending a portfolio or proposal, I challenged myself to build a complete working demonstration tailored to their business.
The goal wasn't simply to create a website—it was to show how technology could streamline their sales process, automate operations, and improve the customer experience.
The Challenge
The business wanted a website that would allow customers to:
Browse fence panels, sheds and related products
Select product sizes and quantities
Place orders and make secure online payments
Request delivery and installation
Provide customer and delivery information
Work seamlessly across mobile, tablet and desktop devices
Be easy for staff to manage and update
Behind these requirements was a larger business problem: too much time spent handling enquiries, creating quotes manually, coordinating deliveries and managing customer information through messages and phone calls.
My Solution
Rather than building a standard e-commerce website, I designed a modern, mobile-first ordering platform paired with a complete business management dashboard.
The result is a digital platform that allows customers to order products online while giving staff a central place to manage the entire business.
