Every week, there’s another headline about AI taking our jobs—or possibly ending humanity altogether. An Anthropic safety researcher recently resigned, warning that AI companies are moving too quickly. I understand the concern. AI development absolutely needs responsible oversight. But I also think much of the fear comes from not understanding how today’s AI actually works. AI still needs humans to set the goal, provide context, question the output, catch mistakes, and decide what should happen next. It can make a skilled person faster and more capable, but it doesn’t replace human judgment, creativity, empathy, or lived experience. We should take AI safety seriously—but we aren’t living in The Terminator yet. Maybe the bigger question isn’t, “Will AI take my job?” It’s, “How can I learn to work with AI before the job changes?” What do you think: useful tool, genuine threat, or a little of both?
