I audited a Shopify store for AI visibility. The score was 22/100.
A client came to me last week. Solid store, good products, decent SEO. Traffic was fine. But they'd noticed something - zero referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Not low. Zero.
I ran them through an AI visibility audit. Starting score: 22 out of 100.
šŸš€ Here's what we found:
1. GPTBot was blocked in robots.txt. A review app they'd installed three months ago had added it to the Disallow list. They had no idea. Every AI crawler trying to index their products had been turned away silently ever since.
2. No Google Merchant Center connection. 83% of ChatGPT Shopping results pull from GMC. Their products weren't in the feed at all.
3. Product schema had a price mismatch. A discount they'd run in January was still in the schema. Page price said one thing, structured data said another. Automatic exclusion from AI recommendations.
4. Every product description was adjectives. "Premium", "high quality", "luxurious". Not a single specific claim. No weight, no dimensions, no materials. AI systems cite verifiable facts - they had none to cite.
5. No FAQ schema anywhere. FAQ schema has one of the highest AI citation rates of any content format. Zero pages had it.
After one week of fixes - robots.txt corrected, GMC connected and error-free, schema fixed, top 10 products rewritten with real specs and FAQ sections added - the score went to 77.
First AI referral traffic appeared within 4 days of the robots.txt fix.
They're now at 77/100. Still work to do on content and authority building, but the foundation is solid.
Most Shopify stores I look at are in the same position. The fixes aren't complicated - they're just not on anyone's radar yet.
