What kills most carts is trying to do too much. 5 upsells, 8 trust badges, 2 countdown timers... Every trick in the book stacked on top of each other. Ritual's cart is a masterclass in simplicity and clarity. Let's break down why it works: 1) "Delivered monthly" is right there for every product. People hate surprise subscriptions. They want to know upfront if they're buying once or signing up for recurring charges. Ritual makes it impossible to miss. No gotchas. This alone kills a massive source of friction at checkout. 2) Talking about clarity. This next one might sound obvious but 90% of brands don’t do this well. Each product shows exactly what you're getting Servings per unit Flavor Savings vs. full price There’s no mental math, No wondering. This structure kills every question before it comes up. 3) At the bottom: discount, subtotal, free shipping. All clear. The exact dollar amount saved is front and center before you hit Checkout, so the customer feels good about their purchase. Important: A lot of brands offer free shipping but still show "shipping calculated at checkout" in the cart. That's a conversion killer. If you promised free shipping on the PDP and then the customer sees that message, they're already thinking they're being scammed. Ritual just says Free. Make it obvious. 4) A few other things they get right: The free shipping progress bar at the top. "You're saving $7" with 1 product. Add another and it jumps to "You've unlocked 30% off." Simple, motivating, not pushy. The upsell section runs horizontally, carousel-style. It doesn't push your cart down or take over the page. That gives them the ability to increase AOV without stealing focus from checkout. Small details, but they add up. And yet none of this is the most important part. 5) What's NOT in this cart matters more than what is. No "Secure Checkout" badge. No 5 trust icons stacked under the button. No guarantee callouts. Most people think the more trust signals you show, the better. That's not necessarily true. A lot of times they actually introduce a new thought into your customer's mind: "Wait, should I worry about security?" "What if I need to return this?" They weren't even thinking about it. By trying to remove friction, you're creating it. 6) TL;DR what makes Ritual's cart convert: a) Progress bar rewards adding more without being pushy b) Subscription frequency is obvious, not hidden c) Product details (servings, flavor, savings) visible per item d) Upsells are horizontal, not vertical clutter e) Free shipping confirmed, not "calculated at checkout" f) Zero unnecessary trust badges Clean.
