Lately I've been thinking about how little I actually create when I have too much free time.

I usually think I need more time to come up with a good idea. But when I finally have a completely open day, I somehow manage to do everything except the thing I wanted to do.

I'll go for a walk, organize something, answer a few messages, move things around in my calendar. And then, at some point, I'll close the calendar and open whatever I was supposed to be working on.

Maybe I don't need more time. Maybe I just need enough structure to give my brain something to push against.

I've always thought creativity needed space. I'm starting to think it also needs a little pressure.

Sometimes, being a designer means designing for yourself.

I started a business and needed flyers to communicate what we were about.

There was no client brief. No one telling me what the visual direction should be. I just knew what I wanted people to feel, what I needed them to understand, and how I wanted the brand to show up.

So I got to work.

I explored a direction, built a visual language around it, played with typography, composition, imagery, colour and storytelling, and eventually, this style came together.

These are some of the results.

For me, this is bigger than making good-looking graphics. It’s a reminder that my design skill doesn’t only live inside someone else’s brief.

I can identify the problem. Shape the direction. Build the visual system. And take an idea from “I know how I want this to feel” to something people can actually see.

That’s the kind of designer I’m becoming: not just someone who executes, but someone who can own the creative direction.

And honestly, I want to do more of that.
