Been sitting on this idea for a while and finally started making it real. A small series exploring what "curved" identity could look like, inspired by the rock hewn churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia, instead of building shapes up, I'm working with the negative space, cutting things away instead of adding. Starting with a mood before anything else existing, colors, on curved cross shape, a rough texture strip, just figuring out what this whole things should feel like. That turned to 3 pieces of far, all built on the same system: 1. The cross, the most literal reference, straight from bete giyorgis carved as a cross when see from above.
2. The terraces, curved in layers, on level at aa time, the way you'd descend through lalibela's stepped courtyards to reach the church doors.
3. The trenches, deep uneven cuts, the narrow passageways connecting one church to another underground. same palette, same restraint, four different ways of carving.
no client, no brief, just something i wanted to make for myself after a quiet few months. feels good to be creating again.
more coming.
