The Black Rose of Capistrano - Book 1 | Dario Vega Origin | Gothic Western Cover
The Black Rose of Capistrano — BOOK 1: Dario Vega
An Original Gothic Adventure
Where it all began. Before Dario Vega became the haunted investigator of Venice, Prague, and the city that never forgets... he was in California. Mission Capistrano. A black rose that shouldn't bloom. A masked figure that shouldn't exist.
This is Book 1 origin — Gothic Western meets paranormal mystery. I wanted a cover that feels different from my Van Helsing London fog — Hot, dusty, ruined Spanish mission, but still that same gothic dread.
The masked cowboy with a black rose = Dario Vega's first curse. The ruined monastery behind him? That's Capistrano itself — beautiful, crumbling, and hiding something in the bells.
Design breakdown:
Genre mash: Gothic + Western + Mystery — Very niche, needed to stand out on Kobo thumbnail
Typography: Weathered gold serif "THE BLACK ROSE OF CAPISTRANO" — Old wanted poster feel
Mood: Dusty sepia + cold moonlight — The rose is the only color
Character focus: Masked Dario holding the Black Rose — Instant icon for Book 1
First book in the Dario Vega saga — Prequel to The City That Remembers, The City That Never Forgets Earth, etc.
Writing a gothic western, horror, or mystery? I design covers that tell the story before page 1. Let's talk!

Exploring alternative concepts for a single product over the weekend.
I started with a simple product shot on a plain background and used Krea 3 to reimagine it in three different settings: playful floating spheres, sculptural glass structures, and a miniature garden.
