I've been wanting to share something that's been on my mind for a long time.
Why do so many people choose to stay silent when they see someone struggling? Why does it often feel easier to look away than to care?
I'm 19 years old, and I've been working in social media marketing and product analysis for the past couple of years. Outside of work, I've spent much of my free time trying to build projects for vocational high school (SMK) students in Indonesia, especially those studying Visual Communication Design.
My goal was simple: help students build real brands and develop practical skills in product photography, videography, graphic design, and social media marketing. I wanted them to gain experience that could actually prepare them for work or even running their own business.
Most of the time, I worked on these projects alone.
I also tried building a startup with the hope of helping SMK students reach the international market. It didn't work out, but the experience taught me something important.
I realized that many students are taught technical skills, but not enough about entrepreneurship, problem-solving, communication, or other core skills that help people build careers. Seeing that made me want to keep going.
So I started another initiative focused on technical training—photography, videography, design, and illustration—with the hope of eventually helping students turn those skills into real opportunities.
It's still a small step, and I know it isn't enough yet.
But one question keeps bothering me:
Does anyone actually care?
I've heard people—including friends—tell me, "What's the point? You're not making money from it. You don't have anything to show for it."
Maybe they're right. Maybe I'm being unrealistic.
But I still don't understand why it's so common to ignore people who are struggling instead of trying to help. The people I'm talking about aren't strangers—they're the students I've met, and in many ways, they're also me.
That question became the inspiration for one of my digital artworks, "Nothing."
I'd love to hear your thoughts—not just about the artwork, but about the idea behind it. Have you ever felt like you were trying to build something meaningful while everyone around you thought it was pointless?
