Visual design stopped being a differentiator this year. I think most of us just haven't said it out loud yet.
84% of freelancers are using AI to move faster now. So "I design fast".... that's not a pitch anymore. It's just table stakes.
I learned this the hard way in July. Lost a fintech bid to someone charging 40% less. Same brief, same deadline. He was running Midjourney and some Figma AI plugin and getting to the same visual quality in half the time. I actually reread his proposal twice that night looking for what he'd cut corners on. Nothing. He just had a faster stack.
So I changed what goes first in my proposals.
Now there's a Business Impact section before the client sees a single screen. It usually has:
- A conversion lift range, pulled from past projects
- A free 30 day check in after launch to look at the analytics
- One number that ties back to their revenue, not just "engagement"
Nobody planning their 2027 budget is asking who has the best taste anymore. They want the person who comes back three months later with a dashboard and says, here's what actually moved because of this.
I used to think good design was the moat. It's not. Proving it worked is.
I rebuilt two of my case studies with the real before/after numbers attached... they're on my profile if you want to see what this actually looks like in practice, not just in theory.
