Your Shopify cart should do more than hold products.
It should reduce doubt, communicate value, and move the customer confidently toward checkout.
The average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22%. Once we exclude visitors who were simply browsing, some of the biggest reasons for abandonment are:
→ Unexpected shipping, tax, or additional costs → Slow delivery → Lack of trust → A long or complicated checkout process
That is why I never treat the cart drawer as a “set it once and forget it” feature.
Here are some of the elements I would test:
→ Static free-shipping message vs. an animated progress bar → Free shipping vs. tiered rewards → One relevant add-on vs. multiple recommendations → Promotion messaging above the checkout CTA → Trust and payment reassurance near the CTA → Different checkout button hierarchy and microcopy
The goal is not to pack the cart with every available upsell widget.
The goal is to find the smallest combination of elements that improves:
• Cart-to-checkout rate • Checkout completion rate • Average order value • Revenue per visitor • Gross profit per visitor
Apps can be useful for launching quickly. But when accurate tracking, performance, brand consistency, and A/B testing matter, a custom Shopify cart often gives us much more control.
Your cart is one of the final conversations your store has with a customer.
Make every element earn its place.
What was the last cart experiment you ran?
