Went through product pages across three different platforms this week for unrelated fixes (Shopify, Framer, and one Webflow build), and the same gap showed up on almost every one: hero and product images with empty or filename-only alt text.
It matters more now than it used to. Alt text was always an accessibility and image-search signal, but it is also how AI answer engines describe a product when they cannot render the image themselves. No alt text means the AI either skips the product or guesses from the surrounding copy.
Five-minute self-check: view page source on a product page and search for alt=. If you find it empty, or filled with something like IMG_4021.jpg, that image is invisible to both a screen reader and an AI crawler.
The fix isn't keyword stuffing. Describe what's actually in the photo the way you'd tell a friend on the phone: material, color, what makes it different. Navy canvas tote, tan leather straps beats tote bag canvas bag shopping bag every time, for ranking and for a customer using a screen reader.
Five minutes now versus invisible later.
