What drew me to these four pieces wasn't just their beauty rather it was the honesty of not knowing. History has gaps. Provenance reads "acquired via trade" or "origin unknown." We will never truly know what crossed whose hands, what sat in whose court, what a 13th-century Javanese king actually looked like or owned. And I find that gap more interesting than any fact

So I asked one question: what if these four pieces never made it to the Museum? What if, somewhere between being made and being found, they passed through one court first? What if Raden Wijaya wore them, not because he took them, but because the world brought them to him?

Nobody knows what he actually looked like. No portraits, no photographs, just artistic interpretations and imagination. Raden Wijaya was a name I learned in school before I understood what empires meant. He was a chapter in a textbook, a founder, a footnote. It took years to realize he was something much larger, a man who built the most powerful maritime kingdom Southeast Asia has ever seen, from nothing. So I built him from scratch, iterating until the face had the right weight. Then I treated the rest like a real editorial shoot: obsessing over framing, light, and what each piece deserved as its own moment. One light source. Heavy grain. Deep red. I wanted the images to feel found, not made.
