One mistake cost me PKR 70,000 and a client.
Everyone shares their wins on LinkedIn. Here's my mistake.
I designed a logo for a real estate client a circular badge mark, clean, simple, the kind of thing that goes through a few rounds and gets approved without
much friction.
It did.
We were in the final stages, essentially signed off.
Then the client messaged me. The icon in his new logo looked identical to an American gas station chain's mark.
He'd attached the chain's logo next to mine. He was right. Not something his own customer flagged something he'd caught himself, before the mark ever went live.
It wasn't copied. It wasn't intentional. It was a shape common enough that it already existed somewhere else, for an entirely different industry.
But "common enough to already exist" isn't good enough when someone's paying for an original identity for their business.
I hadn't run the finished mark through a reverse image search or checked it against a trademark database before sending final files.
That's the step I skipped, and it's the step I don't skip anymore. A reverse image search (Google Lens or TinEye)
and a quick check against USPTO's TESS database or WIPO's Global Brand Database takes a few minutes.
A redo after delivery costs a lot more than minutes.
Do you check your logos against existing marks before delivery, or only after something like this happens?
