From Mechanical Time to Artificial Life This project explores how the idea of the automaton could evolve across centuries—from a tiny mechanical watch to a future artificial being that can appear almost completely human. I began with an 18th-century automaton watch, representing an early fascination with machines that could imitate movement and life. From there, I progressively transformed the original mechanical object into a mechanical robot, then an increasingly advanced artificial being, and finally a highly realistic humanoid designed to resemble a real human while remaining an artificial creation upon closer inspection. The progression represents more than technological advancement. It asks a simple question: if machines have continually become more sophisticated, how far could the boundary between machine and human eventually disappear? The artwork and visual transformations were created in FLORA, using the museum artwork as the starting point and developing the evolutionary stages through AI-generated visual transformations. The resulting keyframes were then animated in Flow AI to bring the evolution from mechanical object to future humanoid to life. The project connects historical mechanical ingenuity with a possible future of artificial intelligence, turning an 18th-century museum object into a visual timeline of machine evolution.
